From School Leadership to Digital Leadership: A New Framework for a New Era

Educational leadership has long been understood tough the lens of physical shools. Leaders managed buildings, supervised instruction developed staff, allocated resources, and cultivated school culture within the boundaries of a physical school environment. While these responsibilities remain important, the growing integration of digital systems into teaching, learning, communication, and organizational operations has created new opportunities and new challenges for educational leaders.
For more than two decades, fully online schools, virtual programs, and other digitally mediated learning environments have challenged traditional assumptions about leadership, teaching, and learning. Beginning in the late 1990s, virtual schools demonstrated that educational organizations could operate effectively without a shared physical space, requiring leaders to develop new approaches to communication, supervision, community building, and organizational management.
Today, these challenges extend well beyond virtual schools. Educational leaders increasingly operate within complex digital ecosystems that include learning management systems, data platforms, online communication tools, artificial intelligence, cybersecurity concerns, and technology-enabled instructional environments. As digital technologies become embedded within the daily work of schools, leadership increasingly occurs across both physical and digital spaces.
Leading in digital environments requires knowledge and skills that have not traditionally been emphasized in leadership preparation programs. Recognizing the growing importance of these competencies, a diverse group of researchers, practitioners, policymakers, and digital learning leaders embarked on a two-year effort to identify the knowledge, skills, and dispositions needed to lead effectively in digitally rich environments. We are excited to announce the result of that work: the release of the National Standards for Quality Digital Learning Leadership Standards, a framework designed to guide leaders, leadership preparation programs, and policymakers as they navigate the evolving landscape of education.
The National Standards for Quality Digital Learning Leadership Standards are now available alongside the National Standards for Quality Online Teaching, Online Courses, and Online Programs. Together, these frameworks provide guidance for building high-quality digital learning environments and supporting student success in an increasingly connected world.
You can explore the standards and related resources on the National Standards for Quality website.

As digital technologies continue to reshape education, the question is no longer whether leaders need digital leadership competencies, but how they will develop and apply them. How will you use the standards to strengthen teaching, learning, and leadership in your organization?
